This is a local project that turned into a national event and is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers. It is now the single largest food drive in the country. In addition to the national event, NALC Local Union 504 also holds a food drive in November. This event starts off a weeklong food drive for the holiday season for the Roadrunner Food Bank.
This is a national project sponsored by the Building & Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO. It consists of a one-day event where volunteers from the building trades unions stand on street corners and solicit donations. This is annual program sponsored by the United Association of Journeyman and Apprentices of the Plumbing and PipeFitting Industry Local Uniton 412. Using 70 - 80 volunteers they service furnaces, light the pilots and winterize airconditioners for low-income senior citizens and disabled individuals. They average 150 homes each year. In some cases where heating equipment is inoperable, they actually replace it with new furnace free of charge to the client. The extra service is limited by the amount of resources available.
This is a project of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation Local Union 1420. It provides students an opportunity to receive assistance over the phone with their homework. Last year they fielded over 2,500 calls from 26 different school districts throughout the state. The start date for the School Year 2009 – 2010 will be September 8, 2009.
