NALC Food Drive – 300,000 pounds of nonperishable food items

This is a local project that turned into a national event and is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers. It is now the single largest food drive in the country. In addition to the national event, NALC Local Union 504 also holds a food drive in November. This event starts off a weeklong food drive for the holiday season for the Roadrunner Food Bank.

 

D.A.D.S. Day – (Dollars Against Diabetes)

This is a national project sponsored by the Building & Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO. It consists of a one-day event where volunteers from the building trades unions stand on street corners and solicit donations. All money collected is donated to The Diabetes Research Institute located in Miami, Florida. The local unions involved this year were:

  • International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 611
  • International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 492
  • International Union of Painters & Allied Trades Local 823
  • Iron Workers Local 495
  • Laborers’ International Union of North America Local 16
  • Operative Plasterers' and Cement Masons' International Associaiton Local 254
  • Sheet Metal Workers Local 49
  • United Association of Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 412

 

HEAT'S ON

This is annual program sponsored by the United Association of Journeyman and Apprentices of the Plumbing and PipeFitting Industry Local Uniton 412. Using 70 - 80 volunteers they service furnaces, light the pilots and winterize airconditioners for low-income senior citizens and disabled individuals. They average 150 homes each year. In some cases where heating equipment is inoperable, they actually replace it with new furnace free of charge to the client. The extra service is limited by the amount of resources available.

 

Dial a Teacher

This is a project of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation Local Union 1420. It provides students an opportunity to receive assistance over the phone with their homework. Last year they fielded over 2,500 calls from 26 different school districts throughout the state. The start date for the School Year 2009 – 2010 will be September 8, 2009.
