Planned Giving

The donor who makes a planned gift is not necessarily a person of wealth, but is always a person interested in helping others, now and in the future. Making a lasting contribution for the future benefit of people in need can communicate your values to all future generations.

As in the case of your annual giving to UWCNM, you may designate planned gifts to benefit:

The Community Fund . . .
One or more charities of your choice . . .
                                                                                                   or Both!

Planned gifts are those that:

  • Require planning
  • Involve your long-term plans
  • Involve your assets
  • Are funded in the future (or over time), or
  • Involve a retirement plan.

They may:

  • Be complete and final
  • Be revocable
  • Benefit the charity:
    • Now
    • After your lifetime
    • Forever

Bequests, IRA Beneficiary Designations, and Life Insurance Beneficiary Designations

  • A simple form of a planned gift is a bequest of part of your assets to United Way of Central New Mexico.
  • Another is naming United Way of Central New Mexico as a beneficiary of your IRA.  DO YOU PLAN TO LEAVE ANY ASSETS TO CHARITIES? If so, the ideal choice is probably your IRA.

Contact our Planned Giving Staff or your tax, legal or financial advisors for more information.  We hope you will include United Way of Central New Mexico in such gifts. When you do, please let us know.

Planned Gifts as Tools in your Financial Planning
Another form of a planned gift is made during the lifetime of the donor in order to accomplish personal financial goals as well as to support charitable interests. This type of gift can enhance the future financial well being of the individual and his or her family while providing for a meaningful charitable contribution. Such gifts can be tools for:

  • Increasing cash flow from your assets
  • Diversifying your assets, and
  • Maximizing after tax benefit to your heirs and the charities you wish to benefit after your life.

Frequently, donors wonder:

“What do I want to achieve with my assets?”

“After we set aside funds to maintain our lifestyle and provide for our goals for our children, how much can we achieve with the balance and how? “

“How can I communicate what I care about...to my loved ones and to others?”

The Planned Giving staff are available to work with you as you consider these questions.

Endowment
In economic downturns, needs can go up…while giving can go down. Like families, communities need a savings account...

A fund, the income of which can be used for current needs and/or saved for
         rainy days…Endowment.

Your gift to endowment can communicate your values to your future generations and your communities’ future generations.

You may wish to consider endowing the COMMUNITY FUND, one or more charities of your choice, or BOTH. Creating an endowment can assure that your annual giving will continue forever.

Emily and Herman Mauney considered how they might
continue forever the services that their annual giving supports.
They began funding the C. Herman and Emily F. Mauney
Alexis de Tocqueville Legacy Society Endowment FBO
The United Way of Central New Mexico.  This endowment will
provide annual funding for the agencies they select forever.
