Women in Philanthropy

At the age of 35, Lisa McCullouch decided to radically change careers and pursue a career in civic engagement. "It was difficult for me, because I had not previously had a career that required much networking on a civic level, so felt daunted at the idea of starting a whole new career and having the right connections to make it happen." She decided to enroll in the Women in Philanthropy Mentoring Program to expand her awareness of and connection to philanthropy and the community.

Give back to your community, share your passion and connect with like-minded women.

Program Basics

  • Eight-month program (March 2012 – October 2012)
  • Mentees and Mentors will meet in person and over the phone three – five times during the eight-month program.
  • A United Way staff member will touch base with you and your mentee at least three times during the course of the program to see how things are going.
  • Mentees and Mentors will have kick-off, mid-program and wrap-up events for the program; the rest of scheduled meetings between you and your mentee are to be arranged between the two of you.

Benefits of the Mentorship Program
Mentee

  • Increased understanding of our giving community
  • Learn about different opportunities in the community to get involved with and connect to your passion or even discover a new passion
  • Access to your mentor's network and leaders in our community
  • Support your development of leadership and philanthropic thinking

Mentor

  • Personal satisfaction in helping to encourage and inspire a mentee's community involvement
  • Promote and encourage Women In Philanthropy involvement
  • Teach and help to develop leadership and volunteerism skills

Expectations of Mentees

The success of this mentoring program is highly dependent upon your ability to be receptive and actively participate in the process. Without hearing about your needs – whether you need advice, guidance, or leadership – your mentor cannot help you achieve your goals. All participants in the program are encouraged to take ownership of the process and responsibility for their role in the program. Here are some tips to make the relationship successful:

  • Commitment to learning and having fun while doing it
  • Genuine interest in community involvement
  • Openness and receptive to receiving feedback and coaching
  • Desire for self-fulfillment
  • Willingness to develop a sense of self and personal vision with philanthropy

Expectations of Mentors

You have the ability to make a difference in the life of a mentee. The success of this mentoring program is highly dependent upon your leadership and participation. The mentee's perception of the program's value is based upon the relationship they have with you as their mentor. Characteristics of a successful mentor are:

  • Demonstrated leadership and commitment to philanthropy
  • Involvement in community and volunteerism
  • Commitment to sharing and having fun
