It is a common misconception that United Ways across the country are local chapters of United Way of America. In fact, United Way of Central New Mexico is one of 1,400 United Ways nationwide. Each is independently incorporated and entirely governed by local volunteers. The money raised in each of these communities is for local programs in that area. In central New Mexico, United Way raises and distributes funds to help the most vulnerable people in Bernalillo, Sandoval, Torrance and Valencia counties.
We want you to be aware of the checks and balances which safeguard your donation to United Way of Central New Mexico. We not only have an extensive set of checks and balances, we also post our entire audit and our IRS 990 annually on our website. Few charitable organizations do this. In addition to having historically clean audits, UWCNM consistently receives the highest positive rating given by the Better Business Bureau for our accountability and transparency.
As a public trust we must be completely open about our business with our donors, our volunteers, the press, and the general public. Our integrity must be set and sustained at the highest level. We must operate above reproach. United Ways and other charities who do not meet this standard can create great harm to organizations like our own. Unfortunately, we are sometimes put in a position where we are asked to answer for their wrong doings.
