We have expanded our free tax preparation services through our Tax Help New Mexico program to ensure more eligible families get access to once-in-a-generation funds through the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act -- Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Free tax preparation is available to anyone whose household income is $57,000 or less or those who are 65 years or older.

With a grant of $609,041 from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Tax Help, which operates state-wide, will add additional capacity where community members can access trained volunteers to prepare their returns.

“The support provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation will mean that more New Mexicans who need to file their taxes and obtain a financial boost can do so,” says Rodney Prunty, President and CEO of United Way of Central New Mexico. “Those returns could be the difference between a family’s ability to pay their rent or not, or to provide for child-care expenses.”

Anyone who is eligible for child tax credits, missed stimulus payments, or the EITC, based on 2019 and 2020 tax returns, can make a reservation for August 21, September 18 or October 16. The August 21 event will be held at the South Valley Multipurpose Senior Center, 2008 Larrazolo Rd SW, as well as at the UWCNM office. A reservation form is available for those dates at taxhelpNM.org.

Anyone with questions or who needs assistance to book an appointment can call the Tax Help resource hotline at 505-247-3671, ext. 265.
